Mediterranean Cruises
Can one briefly describe Mediterranean cruises? Hardly. Can you count the grains of sand along the seashore? Or remember the ever-changing patterns shaped by the waves?
The Mediterranean Sea, around which modern civilization was formed, has always drawn travelers to its shores, inviting them time and again to retrace familiar routes — returning once more to Rome or Barcelona, admiring the mosques of Istanbul, or wandering through the narrow streets of Jerusalem.

Every city that travelers see during a Mediterranean cruise… was founded twenty, or even twenty-five, centuries ago. Each city appears like a layered cake: Roman triremes have just dropped anchor in the port, and you can hear barrels of olive oil rolling down the gangways. A few centuries pass, and the city is under siege, yet the gods are merciful—this time, the invaders retreat. Then, in the Middle Ages, the construction of the city’s cathedral is in full swing—every city was supposed to have a cathedral, not to mention churches and monasteries… A couple more centuries pass, and with the iron stride of a conqueror, a young king enters the cathedral. He has won. Around him, the colors of his knighthood shine.
A few centuries later, another conqueror enters the cathedral, leading his horse by the reins. This man did not believe in God, though he relied on higher powers. A century and a half passes, and the city is in flames—another power-hungry madman has set a fire that engulfs Europe. Yet… it passes, as if reading an inscription on King Solomon’s ring. And now, from the port, strolling past the cathedral at a leisurely pace with a camera in hand… yes, indeed, it is you, dear traveler, walking through history yourself!
Cruises in Europe take place in either the eastern or western Mediterranean.
The western Mediterranean cruises depart from Barcelona and visit Naples, Rome, Nice, Monte Carlo, Pisa, and Florence. The eastern Mediterranean includes Venice, Athens, Istanbul, Ephesus, and the Greek islands such as Santorini, Mykonos, and Rhodes. There is only one cruise that naturally combines both regions. It is called the “Grand Mediterranean” and is operated by the leading American company, Princess Cruises.
For connoisseurs, there are itineraries where the eastern Mediterranean includes visits to Israel and Egypt. The ship docks at Haifa or Ashdod, from where excursions to Nazareth or Jerusalem are available. From Egypt’s Port Said, tours to Cairo and the pyramids can be arranged.
Cruises visiting the Canary Islands and Madeira are also considered part of the Mediterranean. They operate during the velvet season. It remains only to add that, by tradition, the best ships sail the Mediterranean cruises.
In the summer of 2026, the flagships of
Princess Cruises will sail the Mediterranean: the
Sun Princess 5* LUX and
Enchanted Princess 5* LUX.
Sun Princess 5* LUX completed its inaugural cruise in February 2024.
The Sun Princess is the first ship in the Princess Cruises fleet to operate on liquefied natural gas (LNG), making it one of the most environmentally friendly cruise ships on the planet.
• Launched: 2024
• Number of cabins: 2,150
• Passenger capacity: 4,300
• Number of decks: 21
• Displacement: 175,500 tons
Enchanted Princess 5* LUX completed its inaugural cruise in November 2021.
